★ ★ ★ SQL Programming Language Overview

What is SQL Programming Language?

The SQL programming language app is designed for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch based on the SQLite engine. It is a perfect tool for studying, complex mathematical calculations, entertainment, and many other useful tasks. The app is especially useful for learning the SQL programming language. The app has a source code editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers, color themes, and additional keyboard. It also has an online language reference and several program samples. However, the app has some limitations, such as the requirement of an internet connection to compile and run a program, lack of support for graphics, network, file system, and real-time input, and a maximum running time of 15 seconds.

Software Features and Description

1. This version, initially called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language), was designed to manipulate and retrieve data stored in IBM's original quasi-relational database management system, System R, which a group at IBM San Jose Research Laboratory had developed during the 1970s.

2. SQL is a programming language designed for managing data in relational database management systems (RDBMS).

3. The first Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) was RDMS, developed at MIT in the early 1970s, soon followed by Ingres, developed in 1974 at U.C. Berkeley.

4. Originally based upon relational algebra and tuple relational calculus, its scope includes data insert, query, update and delete, schema creation and modification, and data access control.

5. After testing SQL at customer test sites to determine the usefulness and practicality of the system, IBM began developing commercial products based on their System R prototype including System/38, SQL/DS, and DB2, which were commercially available in 1979, 1981, and 1983, respectively.

6. Despite not adhering to the relational model as described by Codd, it became the most widely used database language.

7. Codd's relational model, as described in his influential 1970 paper, "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks".

8. Programming language is a perfect tool for studying, complex mathematical calculation, entertainment and many other useful tasks.

9. SQL programming language for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch based on SQLite engine.

10. Ingres implemented a query language known as QUEL, which was later supplanted in the marketplace by SQL.

11. However, issues of SQL code portability between major RDBMS products still exist due to lack of full compliance with, or different interpretations of, the standard.

  • Great for practicing SQL

    By Dylnore (Pcmac user)

I’m enjoying this app so far, definitely recommend buying unlimited compiles/builds ($3) from the beginning to get the most bang for your buck as opposed to pay-as-you-go which is like $1 for 10 compiles (maybe it’s not exactly THAT bad a ratio, but it’s close). costci, if you haven’t already done so try creating your table and populating it in your source file, then try your select statement afterwards. Remember to put semi-colons at the end of each statement and all that Jazz. My only grievance with the app is about figuring out how to use that input tab, as the instructions only say ‘Enter data on “Input” tab before run program’. Not much to go on there. Like how do you format the data you want to enter? Or how do you name that table you created on the input tab from a file, and query that? I’m sure it’s just some feature of SQLite that more experienced the app programmers would be familiar with, but noobs like me have no idea how to set up the input data correctly. Please update the instructions for the input tab and you’ve got yourself a 5-Star app.
  • Editor with syntax highlight

    By Bobsql (Pcmac user)

I use it only as text editor with syntax highlight.. Works great, wish it would have an ftp capabilities and user defined highlighting. If you set up gmail script, gdrive sync and phpadmin for your the app server, you can do your own compilations)
  • Decent, but charges per compile

By Ham hocks monthly (Pcmac user)

Why make a free to try app then hide any important testing things behind IAP? At least start the user out with a couple. That's a terrible practice. Either make it a few dollars up front or give a tester something to work with.
  • Great App!

    By Zelah Hutchinson (Pcmac user)

I am writing a compiler that targets many languages and this app is ideal for my purposes. Keep up the good work!
